Default NEWBIE!!! Suspension and carb questions

I have a new-to-me '87 Samurai sitting down at the barn. Bought it from my uncle and it's great shape- garage kept for most of its life, barely driven. As far as I can tell it's stock with the exception of some headers.

I intend to use the Samurai for a run-around on our ranch and for hunting. It'll be run exclusively on dirt, including two-track ranch roads and some off-road across-the-pasture driving. Little or no "sport" off-road (.ie rock crawling or "see if I can do it" 4WD'ing). It'll basically be used like a Mule or a Rhino, only a lot cheaper, with a windshield, and probably with better gas mileage, too (I have 2 660 Grizzlys and they only get 20 mpg).

1) Starting- it's hard to start and takes a lot of warm-up before it'll stay running. I have a new air filter on order and will check all the vacuum hoses. While I had the intake cover off, I noticed that something on the carb was hard-wired. I'll obviously take a look at that, but haven't yet.

Q- I'm at 6,000'. Will I need to rejet the carb? I run 2 stroke dirt bikes, so I'm familiar with the process, but not familiar with the 'zuke engine. Is it sensitive to elevation?

2) Suspension- I'm looking to improve the ride. Don't care about show, I just want a better ride, less punishing to my back side. Am looking at AXL-0112 Old Man Emu Dakar Springs Kit (Spings, Shocks, Bushings, Heavy Duty Shackles) on PetroWorks' site (found via Search here!). This looks like a good solution for my purposes, but:

Q. Will I need to lengthen brake lines with this kit? How about steering issues?

i put 20 lbs of air in all my tires like the manual called for and it helped the ride a bunch.mine also has the weber carb and it works much better than the stock carb

I was curious about the Weber, so I'll put that on my list. I got the truck for $1500 and I don't mind putting another $1500 in it over the course of the summer. It'll still be cheaper than any of my ATV's and if I can get one of my dirt bikes ('05 KX144 and '05 YZ250 in off-road trim) sold, I'll put that money into the Samurai and be happy.

if you use the stock carb, there is an ambient air pressure (altimeter) sensor that adjusts the fuel mixture accordingly. If you go with a webber then you may need to re-jet it. The stock carb runs about 250 for a rebuilt carb. The webber is about 300. You may not even need to rebuild the carb though. It might just need it's vacuum lines replaced and routed correctly.

Lowering the tire pressure will help a lot. The nicest ride from what I understand is the jeep YJ conversion. It will require brake lines, wider spring mounts and shackles the spring mounts will need to be relocated, and if you go SPO axle, then you'll need to weld or bolt new perches on the top of the axels too. An over the top steering is recommended for SPOA lifts, but if you don't mind a little bump steer, then you can use a Z-bar. They sell kits at Sky and Trail Tough. The Stock YJ springs are pretty cheap and easy to come by since Jeepers tend to toss their stock springs out and replace them with lift springs.

That's what I've read, too, but that's too much work. Out here on the ranch, I maintain 3 trucks, 3 ATVs, a skidsteer, a backhoe, a tractor, 2 welders, 3 horse trailers, 3 flatbeds, a feed trailer, a dump truck, 3 generators, 4 lawn mowers... I just wanna get the 'zuki smoother, fast and cheap, with minimum headache. Who knows... maybe lowering the tire pressure will be good enough! That would certainly be the easiest approach.

Right now, my #1 priority is getting it to start, idle, and run, every time, on demand, and quickly. Soon's my air filter and misc small parts come in, I'll get on it.

I've had a look at the carb and the part shown in this picture (borrowed from another thread):



is broken. They had one of the tabs wired so as to hold the choke open all the time. The little arm that connects to this is currently just dangling.

I assume that I should replace that part? What's it called? I'm digging around in the manual, but you guys probably already know what it is and where I should get it.

An alternative to the Weber 32/36 is the MYSide kit.

ZOR Zuks Off Road

The description is towards the bottom of the page.

The kit allows you to install a 40 or 44mm Harley Davidson carb on the Samurai. This installation deletes the vacuum line system and ECM like the Weber does. It also runs better in off-camber situations than the Weber.

Bonus: It is built in Central Arizona!

Thanks! I had JUST run across that when you posted. I am looking for good gas mileage, though. The fuel injection system they have on the same page has me more interested. I'll have to read up on that...

I guess for now, I'll just keep the choke wired open, try to set the idle as best as I can, and deal with it. Summertime (.ie when it's warm!) is when I'll start digging into the Sam.

Just gathering information for now....

that's the choke piston. It's not shown in the underhood vacuum routing diagram but you can find it in the Factory service manual.

Got it. Downloaded the manual from Ack's links and found it there.

However:

1) I can't find anyone online who CARRIES the thing! Any help there?

2) From using Search and reading about choke and carb troubles, it looks to me like I'll be just as well off leaving the choke wired open, like it is now. Yes or no?

Also, I should mention again that this rig's going to be 100% off-road and NM doesn't require smog or emissions- not in my extremely rural location, anyhow.
