Default Steering wheel and cluster question

Hi,

I'm going to try and start posting with several questions in one post. At the moment, the other questions I had have escaped me so I only have two for now.

In removing the nut holding the steering wheel on, can I do damage to the steering column, or any components in it putting too much force on the ratchet to loosen that bolt? I do have the wheels turned all the way to the left so they won't turn when I crank down on the ratchet to loosen.

That cover on the steering column is all powdery and sun damaged. I can't get the top half off since I have to lift it over the hazard switch but then the cluster is in the way. I have taken 2 screws out of the top of the cluster--near the windshield and I think there were two more underneath that I removed. It's loose but it's not loose enough to get the top steering column cover off. What am I missing?

You might get a friend to help hold the wheel while you loosen the nut. A quick sharp rap on the breaker handle will break it loose most times easily. Remove the lower cover below the steering column and back off the bolts that hold it up till their ready to fall out. Then you can let it drop to where the cluster will clear with a little finessing.

Hey Zook, thanks! If you're referring to the torx bolts under the column, I had eyeballed those today thinking exactly what you just said to do but I didn't know if it was some sort of critical bolt that shouldn't be messed with. Now I know I can. Thanks! And regarding the steering wheel I was thinking maybe I could have a friend hold a bar or pipe or something to keep pressure on the wheel in the opposite direction. Either way I guess I'll have to suck my neighbor in to helping me!

Zooki,
I got the nut loose and left it on partway while I tugged on the damn wheel so it wouldn't come flying off and send me into the back of the Sami--LOL Any trick you got for getting it off the spline? It's starting to tick me off. And then the steering column. First torx nut came out no problem. Second one stripped partly. I do not have the best set of torx bits so I'm hoping if I get a better, harder one that doesn't give that I'll be able to get that bolt out. If not, any tricks for that? It's too close to wiring to torch a nut on top of it. I guess I could Dremel a cross in it and try and big fat Philips.

Default steering column maintenence

You can also lower the steering column in order to get that top cover off.

This proceedure is also good for removing the dash cluster for maintenence:

Look under the dashboard for two large torx-head bolts that hold the steering column to the dash frame. If you loosen these bolts (it is not necessary to actually remove them!), you can lower the steering column assembly enough to get to the top cover.

See if you can find a better fitting torx. I use a long extension so I don't have to reach in such bind to put pressure on it. As far as removing the wheel it works best to use a steering wheel puller. In many cases tho you can leave the nut on a little just above the threads and pull on the wheel while you rap it (the nut) with a hammer. Just becareful not to damage the threads. Hence leaving the nut just flush with the top of them.

Okay thanks again. I think I'll go ahead and order the steering wheel removal tool. $10 beats my possibly messing it up. :-)

Smart move, Also make sure that the little timing mark lines up. Or make one, so when you reinstall the wheel it'll be inline and not tilted. If it's staight now that is lol.
