Default Diff ratios

Hi guys, Can anyone give me some insight into the different diff ratios that came out across the sierra range (if they ever did vary that is) The reason i ask is because my 86 lwb ute is now running 31's and it seems to push them without an struggle whatsoever. it was running a 16x4 inch rims with a high profile tyre as standard(i dont remember the dimensions), which made me think that maybe the utes had different diff ratios or was there lower gearing in the transfer case.? any info would e great cheers!

the sj70 (last of the sierra's/samurai's) was using about 3.7:1, the sj50 used 3.9:1. im not sure of which years they switched, but someone else will be able to answer that part...

How is the highway speed? Can you get the car to reach 120 Km/h? If yes, then you definitely have lower ratio gears somewhere.

PS: Don't forget to take into account the difference in speedo with the larger tires. I suggest measuring your speed with a GPS.

just went and got the exact difference for jumping from stock to 31" tires... not sure if you use km or miles as i dont know where ur from, but when your speedo says 100km/h your actually doing 113km/h... or when it says 60 mph your really doing nearly 68...

went and looked it up properly for you. SJ40 ran 4.1:1 ratios, SJ50 ran 3.9:1 and the SJ70 used 3.7:1.
years are this: SJ40 1981-1987; SJ50 1984-1989; SJ70 1989-1998

hope all those figures are correct, the years and ratios i pulled straight from the "4WD action" magazine...

Thanks for all the info guys. Acording to my gps the speedo is out by about 11 or 12 percent like you were saying whincup. I'm in australia by the way i have a transfer case out of a 1ltr and the diffs for that matter which i could put in and i'm hopiing that will allow me to run 32's or maybe 33's without striping a transfer case apart and buying the lower gears. Thanks again everyone for your help! Im loving this forum already! its so great to see more suzy fans out there!
