Hi,
I have a stock sierra which has about 2 inches of play in the steering. I was wondering if anyone who has had similar problems could provide me with a list of possible causes and solutions.

Any suggestions (be they DIY or one for the mechanic) will be most welcome.

Cheers,
Robert

loose steering

the first place to start is call drypark check. with the tire on the ground, one person rocks steering wheel two or three inches side to side. a second person looks under truck at all the steering joints. there should be no looseness at tie-rod ends, the out-put shaft of steering gear box should turn but no side to side movement, the in-put shaft should have no in or out movement. if any of this looseness is found the bearings or joints needs to be replaced. if the looseness is found to be in gear box due to worn gears there is an adjustment but it can only compensate for light wear.
another common steering looseness is wheel bearings. To check raise truck so that tire is off the ground and rock tire side to side and up and down, there should be no looseness.

there are more checks but this should get you a place to start.
