Default 87 Samurai in the cold Norte

Ola Group:

I have had a Samurai for several months.

We are in Idajo Norte, and have about 5 months at 20 degrees to look forward to.

The lil Samy starts well at 35 degrees. It plays hell to start at 25 degrees.

The motor turns over well but will not fire. I shot a lil either at it yesterday and no fire, Hummmm ?

Sun warms things up , after a lil time Lil Samy fires right up .

I am wunderin, ifn , a lil water may be in the fuel filter, float, or somewhere, and It freezes between 30 and 25 degrees, maybe ?

Anybody, have similiar situation. ???

auto parts store, reccomended, bottoe of "Heet" to disperse aqua into the fuel .

Suzuki had an electrical accessory part that kept the oil pan warm while parked in cold weather. Just plug it in to the house/garage for overnight. I know it would be hard to find a factory pan heater after 20 years, but I have seen them in the aftermarket. J.C.Whitney sells them as a universal kit.
Something to think about...

Thanks for the information.

Are U talking about a heater hose splice in or something in the pan, maybe magnet on the pan ?

We have some backhoes, 1 tons, F8000 snow plow, Hondo 4 wheeler, etc. . Some, we use a heater inline gadgit. Used to leave them on all nite but discovered 30 minutes would do da trick.

Also on Navistar/Ford/Intl 7.3 they have a block heater, like an electric hot water heater between the 3rd n 4th cyl on the starboard side of engine.

Navistar also has a problem with the cylinders on #3 n 4 rotting holes in them. Navistar says the problemo is, cavitation. They reccommend some chemical additives to aleviate the holes. Me, I think it is electrolysis, due to the unlike metals. I quit using mine.
Never ever, have I heard of cavitation putting holes into any engine block.

On the 7.3z , I kept the delco starter from a 6.9 when it committed suicide. One day it went bad and I took it to an electric shop for a fix. Da guy reccommended a Jap starter I do not remember the name of. This starter , starts the 7.3 as if it wuz the wee Cummings, like the Dodge has.

Ifn I did not do it and still have it, I would not beleive a starter would make such a difference.

For 3 years now, for 5ish months of not running, the Ford has started after the thaw, without a charge, Frickin amazing.

This heater attaches to the oil pan.
One more thing to check out... Does the motor still have the hot air preheater tube from the exhaust manifold to the intake canister? That will help after it gets going.

There is a tube, bout an inch n a half, coming from the port side of the engine, off the sheet metal over the exhaust manifold. It leads to the starboard airfilter or close, ifn I remember rite.

Several locals , a couple days ago, said use the HEET , right off the bat. Water in gas seems to be a problemo here but I cannot say, I ever had the problem in 6 years here.

Cold, is accumulative, as things sit, it effects them more.

Da Samy starts, right up, at 30' which is freezing. It does not fire at 25'.

Bought a new filter. It appears ta me, to be a water trap also, maybe.

Have tried 100 watt lite bulbs in the past, under the pan , with not so very wunderful success.

Funny thing, the Ford 8000 has about an 8,3 cummings or a Ford 1640, same engine. It has a wire in the manifold which heats the air and fuel. So far, it has started while sitting in the snow, for a long time. U cant use ether on it , blam.
