check wiring, Big terminal goes to battery and "S" terminal in the plug, "L" terminal goes to the charge lamp or ECU depending on vehicle its fitted to. If the dash lamp is blown then it won't charge, you may need to also jumper I and L together to get the regulator to activate, this must be via a lamp (charge lamp on dash) or an 85 ohm 5 watt resistor. electrical path for these connections is bat +ve, thru ign switch, thru lamp (or resistor) to L and I terminals.
Pic I have attached is the basic setup without the control feeds as described to make it work
S = sense voltage (senses battery volts to excite Alt)
I = Regulator ECU control via ign switch
L = Charge Lamp via ign switch
P = Rev Counter
