Default Jimny 1999, SOHC, G13BB engine

Hello, im a newbie, from Australia, have a 1999 jimny in stock condition, Im getting old as well. Needs a fair bit of work . i work in the Industrial and outdoor power equipment and ride on mower field as a mechanic, has similarities to automotive but i dont deal much with current engine management, but are learning.

My jimny has a few probs to fix, 4WD light is flashing, A/c isnt working, few oil leaks, just discovered blocked EGR and repairing it, plus a few more things but I'll hopefully get there. I have a suspicion the engine might need a rebuild but are going through some diagnostics , first to fix emission problem (EGR), and work on 4WD fault etc. Will do compression test which will be a indicator whether its going to be ok. Thats the story in a nutshell.

Clean the EGR and ALL the passages first. They are a royal pain and cause all sorts of stupid issues.

Yep I can see the ECU playing games as the EGR is being guided by a few other sensors so could cause some annoying symptoms for sure. And EGR positioned in a hand and back busting place. I cleaned the exhaust and intake , poked some thick brushcutter line through and used a bit carb clean and compressed air. Took the oxy sensor off so I could hear and feel the air coming out. Reckon that should do it?

for a couple of weeks......that baked on carbon is the crud you need to get out, soften it with lps over a few days then tie a knot in the line and use it as a pull thru
its probably clean enough to stop a code while you sort the other stuff, but it will clog again.

LPS2 seems to soak into the carbon nicely, but good old 556 works as well

AH yes something to soften the carbon, i found some yamalube carb cleaner soak, ive removed the inlet EGR transfer pipe and cleaned and will soak the inner tube overnight and cloth it out. it should munch through the crud, ive given it a wire treatment as well. Seems to work well with most cleaning of carbs. Apparently not too aggressive in its action.

The exhaust (channel) to EGR? How do i clean that passage out or is it not to be cleaned? I can hear air coming through from the oxy sensor hole when i push some air through the EGR exhaust hole port, but i suspect the passage is got crud buildup through it. Do i need to remove the exhaust manifold to do it? I dont want to be doing this every few months, id like to do properly this time and get it to work for a good while. Look forward to advice. steve

got to get it properly clean otherwise its going to come back and bug you, inlet sides probably more critical, but the more you get out of the exhaust side the better. If its that bad, you might be in for a manifold removal and a severe poking of the passages (that just doesn't sound right no matter how you try to describe it)to get the carbon out.

yes im with you on this, Ill remove the the exhaust manifold and clean the passage. I know the history of this vehicle and servicing, well it has none but an odd oil change.
