How to fill a Sammy manual steering box?

New guy here. My '88 manual box drags when I rotate the pitman arm. The box was laying upside down for a long time and most of the oil leaked out. I understand the fill orifice is at the vent cap. How exactly is the vent cap removed and what's the procedure for filling the box with gear oil? Thanks in advance!

breather should just unscrew, the cap usually pops off with a screwdriver under the edge to reveal a hex head bolt with a hole down the centre that unscrews. DO NOT undo the adjuster screw.

Thanks for the tips! I'm a visual guy so I snapped some pics to make it easy for the next guy. It turned out to be easier to unscrew the plug with the vent cap on it. 17mm wrench did the trick.

Here's the underside of the plug.

Use the proper gear lube.

Fill it up to about 1-1/4" below the plate (just enough to cover the gears) and you're done.

ahh, yours has the plastic filler plug, great pics, glad you got it sorted. I was going to suggest trying with the cap on, but i've seen them get munched up on the steel bolts.

Well done, now, as long as you remember in 20 years when you have to top it up again.:p
