Default Electrical problem

Howdy!

I've been at this for a while I'll state the problem then what I've done.

Car blows "IG coil Meter" fuse when I try to start it. If I disconnect the ECM it starts and runs fine, except the battery? and O2 sensor light is on.

It has a carburetor so none of the original ignition kit is on it.

I'm a fan of if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I'm not sure if I might cause some problems with my battery not charging or some other electrical systems not working properly.

I've looked at my grounds, the fuse box itself and the ECM, nothing found so far.

Thanks guys.

Figured it out! (Hopefully) It was a bad alternator, just didn't know how to diagnose it. So to hijack my own thread;

How hard is transmission work to do on your own? What tools might I need? It's got a bad throw out bearing.
