Default Engine stalls after high revs

I recently brought a 1986 flat deck sj413 and after countless hours of work I finally got it going, but now after rebuilding the carb the engine idles fine and drives fine at lower rpm but after high revs when returning back to idle speed it just cuts out, after that it refuses to start or will start but cuts out a couple of seconds later, then after a while it will fire right back up. Ive checked for vaccum leaks and found nothing. Any help would really be appreciated

What carburetor? If it's a stock Hitachi, the description sounds like a sticking fuel cutoff solenoid. The solenoid closes off fuel while decelerating at rpms over 2500 (I think). If it's sticking closed, that would be a perfect explanation of what you are describing. Check your service manual for solenoid location and associated activating micro switches.
