Default Engine noise

Hello guys,

Last year I had a chance to buy a 1988 Suzuki samurai. Well finally I had a chance to start the vehicle. When the vehicle is at idle it runs fine, but when I press the gas it makes a clanking noise. I'm having a hard time pining down the exact location of the noise. I took the oil pan off and no metal debris inside oil pan. Any ideas as to what could be the noise?

If the oil pan is already off, slide under with some good lighting and firmly grasp each rod where it joins the crank shaft and see if there is any detectable play, at all.

You may feel or see minute bits of movement for and aft but there should be nothing if you try to wiggle them up/down or side/side. This is a backyard inspection technique but it can be telling, plus it should only take a few minutes. Rod bearings can become worn and sloppy, and knock just from high mileage or lack of maintenance without leaving visible metal shavings in the pan.

You might have to put it in neutral and rotate the crank so each cyl your checking is near BTC making it easier to see and reach. Also if you can put a socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley and just bump it couple degrees back and forth with a visual or your hand on the rod you may be able to spot and/or feel some movement where the rod bearings should be snug with no detectable movement, again looking for any play or slop. Rotating of the crank is a helluva lot easier if you pull the plugs first.

In my experience banging or knocking is often rod bearings, and tapping or ticking more likely somewhere in the valve train, even badly out of adjustment valves can tap pretty loudly. Normally with the engine together and running you could use a cheapo mechanics stethoscope (or long screwdriver) to try the isolate the noise to the upper area around the head or down low in the area of the crankshaft/rods and can maybe even isolate which cyl is the offender.

My guess is there are probably you tube videos showing this bit of backyard wizardry. Good luck and post up results.

Ok guys thanks for the help,

Here is what I found. I went to harbor freight and bought a stethoscope(SP) and pinpointed the noise somewhere between the 3 & 4 cylinder by low by the oil pan. The pinging noise id there at all times but I those get loud as I accelerate the engine. Hopefully I will be able to get under the vehicle this weekend and do a little more checking, if weather allow it. Again thanks for the help.

You could post a video on YouTube and then post link to the video hear.

Your description fits what happens when a engine with excessive engine wear spins a bearing. Which is on its way to throwing the rod through the block.

Usually replace the engine.

But I can't say for sure. BTW your shop could tell you if that is the case. they will quickly recognize the sound. In fact they probably heard it when you pulled up and already thought of it.

Also clanking sound and rattling sound are different. One has a rhythm to it.

Thanks for the info,

I will try to figure out how to post a you tube video. That's what I was afraid of a new engine. That is going to cut in the lift and tires funds. Oh well. Can I verify that is a bearing by doing an inspection of the bottom as mention above?

If the engine didn't pop yet it may be able to be repaired feasibly. Probably a good idea to take it down and inspect all the guts. To be sure you'll have to mic the crank. Maybe, just maybe you can get away with a polish and new bearings, if not you can have it ground and buy OS bearings. That is assuming it really is a rod bearing and the rest of the engine is in good shape. That being said I have repaired or replaced a single rod bearing on a budget, with engine in the vehicle.

The video really will help.
