Default Just bought my first samurai

Like title says I'm new to the samurai world and been running into a few problems With my girl. One is she is leaking something from the passenger side that gets into the car and also it bogs out sometimes in third or fourth gear It feels like I'm not getting any fuel. What would be a legit site to buy parts from?

Any feed back would be happly appreciated.

Also this is what I suspect is leaking and what is it called

Welcome! gratz on your purchase.

The thing in the pic with the green hue to it on top is a heater control valve and would leak antifreeze, if it's leaking inside you might check around the heater core to. That is assuming that the leak is antifreeze and not something else. Get a clean rag and wipe everything down, start and let it run to operating temperature and watch for leakage.

On the carb, these are fairly complex and have their own ECU brainbox inside the cab, other members understand them better than I but I will ask you this, did this vehicle come with any service history? Any idea when filters were last changed? Inspect plugs/wires/cap/rotor as well to rule out the basics. Make sure the choke is opening all the way when warm.

For used parts I go to Mikoda industries, find him on facebook. He has lots of salvage and is Samurai specific. I got new things from him as well. I got lots of items from Trail Tough to. There is a complete service manual available for download on this site, I would probably grab that to, it may come in quite handy.

If it is leaking would I just have to replace the heater core or is there a gasket that might be old?

I just did a whole tune up oil coolant plugs and air filter and got the carbs cleaned and the idle adjusted it was idling a little high. I assuming it might be old fuel and also I looked for the choke but had no luck finding it lol

One last question where can I find the manual been looking every where on this site and I even searched it but nothing.

Low Range Off Road has after market parts as does Petro Works and others. Robs Suzuki Salvage is great.

The carb on the Samurai is very complex. There is a guy down in the LA area that will exchange yours with a rebuild for $350 installed. He is an expert. I found him on Craig's list.

The heater core resides inside against the firewall in a big box, it lays horizontally which is an odd design because leaves and twigs that fall through the cowl layer up on the heater core hindering it's function. It plugs in directly with two hoses, no gasket. It has two brass tubes that stick out through the firewall right behind the rear of the engine. The hoses are fastened directly to those with clamps. The first sign of heater core failure is usually the scent of antifreeze inside the cab (I'm assuming it has antifreeze in the radiator and not just water) which is sweet smelling, like candy or sweet tea, which may be stronger if you turn the heater on. There will be some visual inspection to trace the leak.

Keep pets away from antifreeze, they love to drink it, and it WILL kill them, so dont let it puddle up under the car or leave it sitting open in a drain pan.

On the bogging, did you swap fuel filter with all the other maintenance? Also the choke is at the top of the carb, a butterfly valve that is closed/partially closed when cold and gradually opens as it approaches operating temp (give or take 5 mins) The manual will show you illustrations of the heater core, and the choke as well as information on their function. There are many possible reasons for bogging. One thing you could do right now is inspect ALL the vacuum lines under the hood, make sure none are rotting, split or just loose.

I cant find the link manual, I had trouble finding it when I needed it. If nobody posts the link let me know tonight and I'll see if I cant email you a copy of mine. Also if your near the Black Hills I'm willing to have a look at it to see if I cant help you sort it out.

What year is your Sami?
Tintop or Ragtop?
How do you plan to use said Sami, daily driver? off-road?

Caseyjones I haven't change the fuel filter I will get one today and replace it and I will check all the vacuum lines and update you. It's 88 ragtop and for right now I would like to use it as a daily and eventually off-road only when I get some parts money and a truck to tow it. Thanks so much for helping.

I drive mine everywhere, Most of the year the top and doors are off, I drive it to the trails to when I go but I can be at the nearest trails in about 5 minutes from home. I leave trailering stuff to the Jeep and Harley guys haha.

On the carb issues theres the option of doing a Weber conversion kit, around $225 on fleebay including the carb. Considerably cheaper than buying a remanufactured OE carb plus you can avoid hassling with the computer and all that extra wiring. It's just another option you should be aware of if it comes down to needing replacement. I'm hundreds of miles away from smog/emissions checking but maybe you will still have to deal with it in CA, not sure if a Weber would be an issue in that regard or not. All things to consider if the time comes. Hopefuly you will be able to sort the OE setup you have without throwing hundreds of dollars at it.

I would like to keep it street legal less of a hassle haha. I would remember that if I ever have to replace the carb or anything. Also how do you feel about switching over to Toyota axles?

Damn fine compact diffs. You will deal with a compound driveline angle but I have mine setup to where I can do highway at 75mph with minimal vibration. The added width is a plus for stability and off camber stuff in the hills. I'm a huge fan of the Ford 9" to but never tried them in a Sami.

I pic of mine with Jeep YJ springs, crappy 35" tires, Yota' axles front and rear, rear is post IFS (after 85) narrowed on one side to reduce said compound angle. As you can see it's not absurdly lifted like some creations you might notice on the road.
