Default 3rd member compatibility

I can seem to find any diff parts in my area for a samurai88...would a 3rd member from a tracker or sidekick fit?

Any FRONT third member internals are swappable into a Samurai housing PROVIDED you use a "can" to hold the spider gear pins in place.

If you do this, you MUST swap both the front and rear differentials with the SAME ratio gearing from TWO IDENTICALLY geared Sidekicks or Trackers. This is because the rear differential on a Sidekick or tracker is much larger and is not compatible. Precise assembly is required and can be difficult if you are not handy with tools

You can use the entire Sidekick or Tracker third member but the housing is made of aluminum and is nowhere near as strong as the Samurai housing. There is also the problem of matching the sidegear spline count to your vehicle

On top of all this, your gearing will change as the Samurai featured only the 3.73 ratio while Sidekicks and Trackers had a number of different ratios depending on the body style and engine.

Complicated? Yes, it is. There are compatibility tables on the web that help...

Your best bet is to spend a little time on eBay looking for a Samurai third member - making sure that, if it is a front unit, the manufacturing year is the same as yours as the axle spline count may have changed. Suzuki forums like Zuwharrie.bbs and Zukikrawlers.com have For Sale forums where these items often appear. There are a number of international sites that also offer a For Sale forum.

I hope that this helps!

It is a lot easier to just replace the entire Samurai third member unless there is a need to change your gear ratios.

There is a used Samurai front differential on eBay for $70 plus $49 shipping and a rear one for $90 and $49 shipping. They both end Monday August 24th.
