I have gotten so much information from the forum on this site I really appreciate all your alls work. I have an 87 samurai that I bought from a guy who said it was sitting for several years after being parked because the engine had a knock.

so I bought it, got the thing to fire up, sounded like a wrist pin and I didn't want to tear into it so I bought a used engine. finally got the used engine installed and got it to to start and it runs but seriously lacks power, I can only get up to about 40 to 45 miles an hour. I have to bring the RPM's up to around three to four thousand so I can have power after a shift into the next gear and can't really even make it into 5th.

I have the distributor set as far at advanced as it will go, I didn't change any thing else to do with the timing, I'm wondering if the people I bought the engine from possibly started tearing it down and maybe re-stabbed the distributor getting a tooth off or maybe got the belt off a tooth. I'm reluctant to pull the distributor or adjust the belt because I don't know which way to turn either to try that. I did read in another thread about the timing mark on the crank and the cam both at the 12 o'clock position should be top dead center cylinder 1 but again I'm not sure whether to touch the distributor or the timing belt or both. being the distributor is all the way in advanced I put a timing light on and its at 10 degrees btdc. that's why I suspect maybe the distributor or the belt is jumped a tooth, I also noticed scribe marks about in the middle of the distributor adjustment clue me into the possibility of someone having messed with setting the timing not too long before i bought the engine. Engine actually feels OK upon acceleration but once I get into 3rd gear any kind of incline bogs it down ditching me to downshift to keep moving, 4th gear would be unusable on an incline and 5th gear can't even be mentioned at this point.

I did a valve adjustment setting it at .008 with no noticeable results. They were probably about .009 to .0010 originally before I messed with it. cam lobes look slightly worn but I haven't been able to put a caliper on them or a mic yet. I don't even know what they should be. I put a new fuel filter on twice now but I don't think it's a fuel restriction or delivery issue, however I'm not ruling out the possibility of maybe a clogged jet. When I feed fuel directly into the throat I can't tell any difference in response. I haven't done a compression test but I don't really think that's an issue either after doing a finger test. That distributor bothers me and causes me to think it's a timing issue. Open to suggestions thank you all!

First - you should be able to get a manual from Ack's FAQ.

Second - we need to know a little more about the vehicle - what size tires does it have on it?

At this point I would suggest wet & dry compression tests on your "new" engine - partly because I don't trust the "calibration of your finger", and also because the compression numbers can be used to diagnose cam timing.

Let's see some numbers.

ok thank you for your quick response, I'll get the compression numbers ASAP. Meanwhile the tire size is 10-15 Lt.

That's about a 31" tire, quite a bit larger than stock, that could be the problem, assuming that the gearing is still standard.
