Default 86' samurai Engine swap

So i have a 86 samurai 1.3 and i have engine issues, now i've been thinking about doing a swap. Whats a good engine to do a swap?

Common swap is 1.6L from sidekick. TBI 8 valve is easier. 1.6L 16 valve from 95 and newer has MPFI and a few more HP (85 vs 100hp IIRC) but some extra ECU wiring to deal with. I love my 16v, I would do it again in a heartbeat but I would pay to have someone else deal with the harness conversion, I think to have it doctored up as plug and play runs around $400 or so. This has been done countless times and there is a great deal of information on either version of the 1.6 you choose. Conversion kits are available from most of the Suzuki vendors. You will keep the Samurai transmission for these but use an adapter.

There is a Sami on here with an L20B, what a sweet setup that is. I'm a bit of a rotary whore but the power delivery would be all wrong. Also look into VW diesel conversions but some say not ideal for highway use. Steer clear of V6 or V8 conversions, the few I have spoken with that had these done had more regrets than anything else.

What are you going to use the Samurai for? What do you need it to do?

I just swap my 1.3 EFI with a 1.6 8v.I keept the injector, and the ECM the distribuitor from 1.3 engine.The engine is idlig but in gear will stall.I have new plugs,distribuitor cap.

Dolmarfan, the injector system from your 1.3 is to small for the 1.6, your running very lean on your 1.6 engine.

The components for the 1.6 8v should be readily available and dirt cheap. For the sake of the OP, if he is going to do a swap himself and wants ease of installation the 8 valve is a great swap and cheaper to do, the 16v is a sweet little motor but the added expense of having someone convert your wiring harness with the 16v harness must be considered. I use my Samurai on the highway as well as out in the rocks and trees. I believe if your going to take it on the highway much it's well worth the extra $$ to use a 16v. I am looking to buy a Sidekick and I wont even consider an 8v, not that they are bad in any way, just that with the hills and open roads around here that extra 15hp or so is very welcome.

Mine is on 35" tires and has been regeared appropriately but I touched 83 mph (GPS) on level ground yesterday with no wind. Hills and headwinds will knock me down to 55-65 mph and 4th gear pretty fast but I get ok MPG and MPFI is great for drivability and reliability. Knowing how you plan to use your Sami and what your budget/mechanical ability is will get you some well rounded recommendations and sources for the parts you will need.

I've still got a hankering to build a turbo rotary rear drive street use only Samurai.
