Default New guy

New to the forum but not to the Suzuki. In the past I've own several, 3 rag tops, 2 four doors, an XL7, and two Sammy's. The newest is a sweet 87 ragtop Sammy with a 4 inch lift, custom bumpers, 31.5 tires and custom wheels, and a 1.6 tracker motor. Kicked my butt ever since I've sold my 88. Going to run this problem by you guys. Tuned it up today and runs great. The only problem is when ever I turn the headlights on or wipers or heater its like you turn the ignition switch off. It starts and runs fine as long as nothing electrical is turned on. I am thinking "pull the alternator and have it tested". What do you guys think?

Thanks Jd hogg.

Thanks Jd hogg.
first of all, let me commiserate you on owning the hogs ever since I got stuck with an '88 with weeping cracks all thru the cases i've gone right off them. (and the 'zook has a better heater than a bike in the cold weather)

as for the more important issue, got a multimeter? check charging volts at the battery at 2500 rpm, should be about 14.5 Volts, if its under 14, get the alternator overhauled, if volts are ok, chances are its not the alternator. I'd start checking ground wires between frame and engine, by fuse box etc, i'm suspicious that you have one loose or missing somewhere which is causing volts to plummet when you put any load on. Theres one sneaky one down the back of the engine and someone in another thread has been chasing issues for months and found it loose, hes had no problems since.

and just remember, Harley owners must tighten their nuts daily (because of vibration you dirty minded individuals, what else were you thinking of?)

Thanks ....that was on my list of things to check. I see you have a Holden with a 383,Im not sure but that's a GM right? I had a 63Nova SS with a 350 stroked to a 383. The block was out of a 82 Corvette L82. It had 202 heads ported and polished big cam 650 double pump holley with a 66 vette 4 speed. It wasn't 4 wheel drive but it was faster than the Sammy LOL THANKS

yeah, its an australian GM derivative, the engines a stroked 350, but the body is all aussie, as was the original 253 ci engine. google HG holden for pics

engine is dyno'd at 440 HP, 800 CFM square bore double pumper holley, Dart heads, 64cc intake runners, Eldebrock air gap manifold, MSD 6AL with rev limit at 7200, and pacemaker headers into 2 x 4" pipes and a 2" balance and its street legal, but a bitch to drive in the wet, it lights up at 60 mph in a straight line when its wet (fun....NOT)
All set up as a "sleeper", only giveaway is the custom 383 badge and the 4" exhaust on each side.

this pic was during the rebuild (bare steel upwards.

oh, its a 1 owner too....am i showing my age?

Love the SS nova's too, but very rare here, and a new Hog is getting towards $32 k, yep, $32,000 for a new softtail deluxe.

yeah, similar but more "boxy" and made out of a metal that attracts rust more than anything else on earth.
