Question Transmission click noise in 5th?

My 88 Samurai just started making a clicking noise in 5th. It is slower than the drive train rotation. It stops when I downshift to 4th. When stopped I can hear a faint click at idle. If I back off on the throttle it quits as well as when I put the clutch in at speed. Ideas? Thanks, PK.

Is this stationary in neutral? Clutch up or down?

I'm talking stationary in neutral, clutch up. Also I just did a short test run and checked for the noise in hi and low range, it's always in 5th under load. PK

Thumbs down

I finally got it into the shop and up on jack stands. Listening with a stethoscope the clicking noise is always there, but very loud in 5th. Clutch in, it stops. When I drained the trans oil a piece of gear tooth came out. It looks like a small narrow tooth. Looks like rebuild time. PK
