Red face Driveline disconnected from rear pumpkin

Hi there, I'm hoping to get some help with my 88 Sammi. I was coming over a pass and noticed some vibration when I started to accelerate. I immediately pulled over to discover the rear end was smoking. I tried to pull it forward a bit, but there was knocking and resistance. I got it towed home and discovered that the driveline was pulling away from the rear pumpkin. The seal is visible and you can pull on the driveline. What steps should I take to start fixing this? Do I need to replace the whole rear axle?
Thanks in advance,
Noel

Dig out your repair manual, preferably one from Haynes that was written by English speaking folks that have hands-on experience, and prepare to remove and rebuild the rear differential.
It is usually a pinion bearing failure that results in the pinion shaft moving forward.
Unless the case is chewed, it is very inexpensive to rebuild these differentials, and then you will know the parts are new and properly installed afterward.
