Hi,
I drive a diesel samarai 1.9td.
Last week driving down motorway realised I was going faster than I meant to. Foot of gas , kept going faster, by now a banging like dropping a big end. De-clutch , engine screaming, pedal has returned to top. switch off. engine keeps going, by now flames and thick smoke out of exaust. Only way to stop engine is stall it. Sit and think for 5 mins. Temp. normal, no warning lights, no loss of coolant. Try to start engine, starts and runs perfect. switches off ok. continue journey, no funny noises no problems. Causes please

If you've got one that's using the VW diesel-- they are known for this runaway (at least the 1.6)

Essentially blow-by oil gets sucked into the intake thru the pcv valve, and becomes 'fuel....'

It was more common in earlier ones-- VW installed a 'baffle' in the valve cover (it's available for retrofit..)

IF-- you can look thru the oil filler hole, and see valves.... YOU DO NOT HAVE THAT BAFFLE..

Hope this helps..
