Default How to obtain 440+miles per tank-I did it..

Recently I pulled 440 or more miles out of a full tank of gas or about 12.5 gallons-believe it or not. That's about 35 miles per gallon on my Forenza with 137000 miles on it!

I'm gonna list the things I do to maintain this:

I usually drive between 60-65mph on the highway-state roads and interstate and my laptop is usually running with a 150 watt power inverter, along with a seat cooler(both plugged into the cigarette lighters. I also have my AC running all the time since Georgia heat and humidity would kill me otherwise and that is usually set on 1 or 2. So, I always have my AC running and electronics powered.
I also have to keep my vehicle running on idle sometimes for the AC during surveillance operations. I also have times where I push my car to limits trying to follow people.

Here is the maintenance I usually do to my vehicle:

-Mobil 1 synthetic oil(high mileage now) every 6000 miles
-Spark Plugs changed every 15000 miles and they are usually Autolite platinum
-Air Filter is visually inspected and the assembly is completely closed.
-Coolant and Transmission fluid changes as needed
-*Wheel balancing and wheel alignment when needed(very important)
-I clean my engine every so often- it removes dust buildup and allows the engine to operate more smoothly.
-*Lucas fuel injection cleaner every 2 oil changes- I do this religiously
-AC recharge every year to make sure my AC is working efficiently
-Tires are at 35psi(you can feel bumps a bit more but allows the car to roll easier)

Driving habits:
I let go of the gas pedal whenever I see an upcoming light, drivers behind me might not like it but I dont give a shit.
I speed up very easily- I almost never exceed 3500 rpms, and tend to stay below 3000 rpms until the transmission shifts.

I am no hypermiler or anything-I am just trying to maximize my mileage as best I can and have been doing it since I got the car in '04. If I had to do straight highway miles (without AC running, electronics, or surveillance operations)on a full tank of gas I could probably pull out 460-500 miles on it. For the last week i have been getting in the 440 mile range.

My car has never died on my and the only major fix I have had to do is the brakes. I love this car to death and I hope this helps you guys save gas and money.

I also forgot to add that replacing my old battery with a new aftermarket battery seemed to help my engine work more efficiently also.

Yeah, I generally stay underneath 3000 rpms too. But 440 miles. Wow

I just broke 520 Check my signature, it tells all! 520 before the gas light came on (not steady, just poped on then off) out of 12.522 Gallons in my 06 stock forenza. Unfortunately my digi-cam crapped out I did have a pic of it at the gas pump. I'll grab one next time.

The only thing I do not do that most hypermilers do, I don't kill my engine. I tried it a few times, however on my Forenza it seems to use more gas to start it, or to even pop the clutch than it does for me to just idle around.

Feather the gas, keep RPMS under 2500, shift at 2500 and coast downhills with the clutch pressed is really all I do. Oh and slipstream trucks. Not exactly safe being 5-10 feet off their bumper, but I won't argue with coasting behind them for 10 miles without using much of my gas

I concur with the first post, stay on top of your maintenance, it will help regardless if you hypermile or not. Slow and Steady is the ultimate key when it comes to driving. Practice keeping your foot steady in one position for half an hour, it makes life easier to remain constant while on the roads if you don't have cruise control such as I don't.
