Automotive News' Anonymous Source Says No 2009 Suzuki Forenza, Reno

Autoblog reported today, second hand from a subscription-only Automotive News article the following:

Suzuki Forenza, Reno get the boot after '08, Swift convertible in the works. According to an un-named source quoted by Automotive News, the SX4's market share will continue to expand, with the aforementioned sedan as well as a hatchback model supposedly due in 2009. As for Suzuki's sub-compact offering, we can still expect the Swift to arrive on U.S. shores in 2010, packing a more performance-oriented punch than the SX4, with a convertible version due out sometime afterwards.

This move, if true, would appear to be a gamble by American Suzuki, since the Aerio sedan and hatch have never performed nearly as well as the Forenza / Reno in the U.S. market, and the SX4's sales record (with a hatch only) thus far has been Aerio-like. In fact, since Suzuki still reports SX4 sales combined with the Aerio, it's hard to tell just how well the new car is doing.

Sales for 2007 as of a month ago:

AERIO/SX4: 9,246
FORENZA/RENO: 28,259

If anything, this points to a certain level of confidence from Suzuki regarding their SX4 Sedan (Sport) and long rumored debut of the Swift in the U.S.A. The addition of another plant for the SX4 in Japan (next year) is also likely to allow a larger dealer inventory of SX4's, a problem the SX4 has faced has been lack of sufficient numbers of the new car.

Sad part for me, of course, will be that Suzuki appears to be losing a true wagon - since Suzuki has had one for a while now when you consider the Esteem Wagon and the Forenza Wagon. On the other hand, apparently Automotive News does not single out the Forenza Wagon as leaving.....hope?
