Default Broken Timing Belt

Hi there, my GF lost her timing belt coming home recently and it seems like the engine is probably trashed (interference motor etc.). But when it broke (Im thinking the tensioner failed, but Im not 100% on that) she was decelerating down an exit and was coasting. She noticed some noise and clutched. Then the car died and wouldnt start. So I figured out it was the timing belt quickly. Im wondering if, since she didnt have the car under load and was coasting down a fairly steep hill, that there is a chance that she didnt do extensive valve train damage. Or if the circumstances really dont play into that possibility.

Engine rotation whether coasting or accelerating doesn't change the probable damage equation.
