I've heard quite a few times about how crappy this engine is, and I almost started to agree.
See, I had to put on hold my engineering degree. My son is here, I need work now rather than later, and my credits are good for two years. I started an Automotive Service Tech Cert. So pretty soon I will be a mechanic...which is ironic in its own way.
Well, on this day in the shop, I scored the highest compression test rating than 15 other guys. The only one that came closest was a 200psi on 3 cylinders... and that was a relatively new Mazda6.
I managed a 230 on all 4, with 0% bleed down, meaning it held at 230 long after the cranking stopped. Needless to say I am pretty shocked lol. And it gave me bragging rights around the shop for the day lol!
The engine is almost 7 years old. obviously the seals and rings are in excellent condition. I did blow a headgasket a few weeks ago, and I'm waiting for the new one to come in the mail. In the meantime I used some stuff called KW block sealer w/ nanotechnology, and I still scored 230psi on all 4. It blocked the heater core, so I back-flushed it and all is well. The thermostat was fine after I used that gunk, but I replaced it anyway just for general purpose.
If anyone says this engine is crap we now have proof they don't know what their talking about. Some parts may be (are) low quality, but this is a tough-as-nails-engine.
