Thumbs up Strength of the U-20-SED Engine

I've heard quite a few times about how crappy this engine is, and I almost started to agree.

See, I had to put on hold my engineering degree. My son is here, I need work now rather than later, and my credits are good for two years. I started an Automotive Service Tech Cert. So pretty soon I will be a mechanic...which is ironic in its own way.

Well, on this day in the shop, I scored the highest compression test rating than 15 other guys. The only one that came closest was a 200psi on 3 cylinders... and that was a relatively new Mazda6.

I managed a 230 on all 4, with 0% bleed down, meaning it held at 230 long after the cranking stopped. Needless to say I am pretty shocked lol. And it gave me bragging rights around the shop for the day lol!

The engine is almost 7 years old. obviously the seals and rings are in excellent condition. I did blow a headgasket a few weeks ago, and I'm waiting for the new one to come in the mail. In the meantime I used some stuff called KW block sealer w/ nanotechnology, and I still scored 230psi on all 4. It blocked the heater core, so I back-flushed it and all is well. The thermostat was fine after I used that gunk, but I replaced it anyway just for general purpose.

If anyone says this engine is crap we now have proof they don't know what their talking about. Some parts may be (are) low quality, but this is a tough-as-nails-engine.

Wow that's great to hear!

I would also agree that these engines are pretty tough, with the exception of the stock headgaskets (they suck). But after the amount of driving and boost mine has gone through it still runs fine. Its a little tired (a fair amount of blowby) and the compression is nowhere near yours, but its hanging in there.

hi Nathan. good to hear your motors healthy lolol... its a proven motor design thats been used for something like 30yrs and is still the choice for tuners today in Europe. its used in tons and tons of race cars. they mostly want the c20let turbo version of the motor. unfortunately Suzuki got screwed by some shifty parts suppliers, i think gm was using, in Korea. thats why some of the parts like the head gasket have been problems. i think thats why Suzuki had to pull out of America. i think its not thats people think its a bad motor but more nobody knows what it is or what its capable of lolol.
