Guess I will be keeping my 2001 wagon on the road awhile longer...only 179,000 miles so far...

Actually, I do have a question - I left it in the shop with fully functional ac, but mechanic said he was trying to do me a favor for my patience in leaving the car with him for an extra day, & tried to charge the ac - and now it needs something called a POA valve. No ac here in Virginia is really not ideal.

Any ideas of what could have happened to it? And is this an expensive repair?
if the a/c is now non functional, his issue, make him fix it since hes broken it.

Easier said then done.

Does replacing the starter or cleaning the throttle plate take you anywhere near the ac?

yep, very easy to bend or crack a pipe, or dislodge wiring controlling the a/c as the starter, and access to it takes you in the vicinity of the a/c system.

the fact he said he "tried to recharge it" suggests he fiddled with it and has caused the issue.

Thanks for replying, I really appreciate it.

I made it clear that the ac was working when I left the car with him, but he kept telling me about how he was trying to help me out by topping up fluids, etc. He told me that when he was test driving it, he noticed it was hot & decided to help me out by recharging it. I didn't ask him to do anything with the throttle plate, either, just to check my starter.

I don't know what to think. I thought he was a decent guy. This is a small town.

Expansion valves don't seem to cost much, but I assume anything to do with ac is not diy. I guess I should go back & ask him about it. Ugh.

I had the front bumper painted, it was purchased new, but it was not convenient to go to the body shop. Required because I was knocked off the road in January. The front cross-member was straightened the day before, along with adjusting the front of the car.

Scrapes on the rear bumper and rust on the rear hatch were refinished , touch ups needed were done also. Still must return for buffing/blending. The front right bumper was straightened because new was out of stock. The new headlamp was fitted too.

Changed the driver's door "stay open" and the EGR valve yesterday, hope this puts an end to the P0400 code. Must order the gasket from Suz. it was missing. Picked up the parts at the recycle yard. Pure luxury having the door stay open and not closing when on a slant or a wee breeze is blowing.

It's been a bit of a 2 weeks with my Suzuki. So, last week was the new battery & starter with consequent unsolved ac issue.

Headed out to jury duty last Wednesday, and my brakes went out. I live on the side of a mountain, so this was fairly terrifying. Made it to the mechanic (NOT to jury duty), and he found a rusted-through brake line. Hmm. This was only 20 miles after he had replaced the starter, when the ac stopped working. Sheesh.

Took it back this morning to get a state inspection. I mentioned to him that the caps had been left off of the ac ports when he had tested it, and that I couldn't get the replacement ones from Advance auto to fit on & asked him to try.

Well, while I waited for the inspection, he got to work & diagnosed the ac issue - not the expansion valve after all. He found a broken wire - right up front, near the condenser sorta. He said it looked like someone had been working on it - there had been some tape on it. This must have been prior to 2011, when I bought the car, or more than 65K miles ago. So, a coincidence...?

Anyway, he also said that when the ac started working, the pressure went way up (over 400psi) & the radiator fan didn't come on. He showed me how he had put a jumper wire on it to get it to work. (My ac was cold as ice, so yay!) When he took off the wire, to demonstrate the fan issue, the fan continued to work.

That is how we left it, with him warning me to keep an eye on the temperature.

I am now another $1000 into the car - battery, starter, throttle plate cleaning, brake line repair, ac diagnosis and inspection.

Since I only paid 2 grand for it in the first place, here's hoping this will keep it going. Not really complaining about my Suzuki - haven't had to spend much on it for awhile (especially compared to my husband's money-sink Volvos...)
Sorry, I wrote a book here!

Any advice re: possibly intermittent fan?

Gotta drive 200 miles to see my mom day after tomorrow...that should be a good test. Will be sure to bring my AAA card.
(Is that considered thread hijacking, should I start a new one?)

UPdate: CEL came on 30 miles after leaving, he tells me it is that EVAP message & told me to get a new gas cap...so far, the fan seems to be working, fingers crossed.

Here I go to NC, wish me luck? (and better than my usual 25 mpg)!
