Default altenator problem

The battery will charge from 13.8 up to 14.4, above 14.4 the battery will get hot and boil the electrolyte (bad) and below 13.8 the battery won't charge( also bad). As for your question about where to put the probes, first turn on the lights and accessories to draw some current then check at the alternator where the big cable connects from the battery. First check at the bolt that holds the cable to the alt, then check at the cable itself. The reading should be very close to the same. Do the same at the other end, check at the battery cable terminal then the battery post. You are actually checking for a loss of voltage across the cable and connections between the alt and battery. Dirty connections or bad cable can limit the current flow. That will show up as a significantly higher voltage at the alt than at the battery,
