Question Change Gear

Guys, what RPM do you usually upshift from a lower gear?

In a freeway (no traffic), how many seconds do you have to stay in one
gear before you can reach the 5th gear? (normal driving)

What is the minimum RPM that you can shift to 5th gear?

j-six is on a distinguished road

as for me it takes about 1 minute on free highway w/o traffic, smooth gear shifting. pero if you try to almost redline it before shifting syempre mga about 30 seconds.

nga pala, my super carry doesn't have a redline (tachometer) kaya i shift via engine sound.

ako rin, walang tacho... so i base it through engine sound... i'm planning to add a tacho soon, its around Php 800, lang naman for 3inch tacho...

bro,can you tell me where can i buy the tacho? and where,who can install this?
coz, meron akong nakita dito Php2,500 ang benta nya.
btw, sometimes i over rev on my 1st gear to second gear shifting.thats why i really need to install this thing

bro j-six, you mean from say 2nd gear to 3rd gear you waited for 1min.
to upshift? or you mean the whole 1 minute from 1st gear to 5th gear??
Anyway during heavy traffic you can stay in say 2nd / 3rd gear for
a few minutes as long as you don't really push hard on your gas.
Exception of course if you go to Baguio or any mountain road uphill
in which staying in 1 gear (1st / 2nd gear) is inevitable.

Actually I asked all your ideas to check if I'm doing the right thing with
my shift stick. In my case, I do this: (on plain, no traffic road)

1st - 2nd: max. of 2sec. only
2nd - 3rd: abt. 3sec. or 2500rpm (whichever comes first)
(actually on a plain road, I often start with 2nd gear from a halt)
3rd - 4th: abt. 5 - 6sec. or 3000rpm (whichever comes first)
(longer 'coz I like the sound of my engine on 3rd gear compared to 4th, etc., it's like a sports car, hehe. . . but no muffler)
4th - 5th: at least 6sec. or 2500rpm (whichever comes first)

my speedo has the gear numbers on it (2nd gear on 20khp, 3rd gear on 40kph, 4th gear on 60kph) so ideally you shift on these speeds (mine is a four speed only). but i rely more on my tachometer for changing gears. on relaxed days i shift at 4000 to 4500rpm but on days when i feel the need for speed i shift at 5000 to 5500rpm to maximize each gear. but of course all of this is taxing on the engine (see my other post on overheating!).

We have a slightly different RPM values for shifting gears. If I tried
yours maybe I'll be the king of the streets, hehehe. . . overtaking
every vehicle on the road. Anyway, maybe we have different settings.

Just one question: What's your idle RPM ???

Mine is slightly over than the Specs. (1,200 rpm)
Specs written on my engine hood / cover is 900+-50 rpm.

hi bruce,

let me rephrase my previous reply...

i only have 4 forward gears so a 5speed gearbox would perform differently. the numbers on my speedo (which reads only up to 100kph) are 1 at 20kph, 2 at 40kph, 3 at 60kph. so this means i can use 1st gear up to a speed of 20kph, 2nd gear up to 40kph, 3rd gear up to 60kph, then 4th gear upwards. this is the ideal situation.

normally i just use the 1st gear to get the truck rolling then quickly shift to 2nd gear up to about 20kph then shift to 3rd until 60kph then 4th gear from here. that's because i rely on my tach. the figures on the speedo are just a guide since there is no OEM tachometer.

my idiling right now is at 950rpm. when the engine is hot it plays up to 1000rpm but more or less stabilizes at 950rpm.

bruce, just an add-on...

when i overheated my engine (well not really overheating but very high temp-half the gauge) i was running my idle at 1500rpm. a bit taxing talaga on the engine and forget about fuel efficiency! haha.

i bought a new distributor cover and wire harness so i retuned my idle to 950rpm. old wires and connections tend to play with your rpm because of the inefficient conduction of electricity.

i think your 5speed tranny helps a lot in terms of fuel efficiency as well as your efi. the engine's tick-over is a good indicator of when to shift up. but of course it depends if you're on an incline or carrying heavy loads.

Anyway, just to clarify about your statement above, do you mean
that we have different gear sizes for 4 speed & 5 speed??
Pls. correct me if I misunderstood you, ok?

I didn't have the chance to open my tranny but I believe our gear
ratio is "more or less" similar to these:

Gear Ratio
1st 2.315:1
2nd 1.568:1
3rd 1.195:1
4th 1.000:1
5th 0.915:1


Standard Part

1st 3.584:1
2nd 2.022:1
3rd 1.384:1
4th 1:1 4th
5th 0.861:1

Maybe sir monometalico will have a precise answer for this . . .

Anyone knows our exact gear ratio ????
