Default Old spark plugs - what do you think?

I just checked the rocker arm clearences on my 1999 993cc engine and they were all perfect! The engine has done just 4000 miles in total and during the process I removed the spark plugs - they are NGK BPR5ES type - but I noticed that the manufactured date on them is M898 which translates to 1998 - so they must be the original fitment. They look ok albeit slightly discoloured with surface rust on their upper surfaces but my question is - since they've only done 4000 miles in 20 years should I really need to replace them? Do they "go off" over time or is the replacement linked to duty - as in mileage.Does "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" apply here?

Plug electrodes "erode" with usage - each time a spark jumps the gap there is a minute transfer of material from one electrode to the other, so the life is generally driven by usage rather than time, but they can also fail in other ways.

The real question here is (or perhaps should be) - what's the cost of a set of plugs in your neck of the woods - are they that expensive that replacement becomes an issue?

It's not the cost that is an issue as a set may set me back about 10, It's that my Alto is a true "time warp" vehicle that looks truly new though made in 1999. All of the parts still have their original manufacturing labels and the exhaust is still shiny steel - just like it left the factory. If the original plugs are still good I'll leave them in as they are part of a greater antique.
