Nice car mate, gave it the like :)
  2. Coolant in oil, but the cylinder head is flat? Could it just have bin this gasket?

    Sidekick/Escudo/Vitara/ Geo/X-90 &Tracker(’89-’98)
It' fixed! And it only took 2 months and 2 rebuilds :) The welsch plugs were the problem. In the end it cost me $20AUD to get the local machine shop to replace them. If I had know it was so cheap and easy I would have asked the first guy to do it. As far as I am concerned now, if you take a...

Hello again :) I got the head pressure tested again, hot and cold, and they found a tiny leak at a welsch plug. Pinhole rust in the steel plug apparently. They did defend the other guy saying that false results happen all the time, and they could also have missed something since they just...

Thanks everyone for all the feedback :) I did get the head pressure tested, apparently it passed. It also had 0.005" taken off, just for good measure. Can the test return false positives? I think it was taken to 100psi and left overnight. So I guess I should take it for another pressure test...

:( Seemingly undiluted coolant sitting localised under the valve cover. This makes me think its coming out after the hot motor is switched off... Any thoughts? At this point I'm gonna order a new head gasket. Still haven't had access to a compressor. Tried to use a foot pump but that didn't...

Man thanks Don, the compressed air is a great idea :) I keep forgetting to mention that when I open the oil refill cap while the car is running, it thrums like a quiet version of a pulse jet. Is that normal? I can't remember if I took the oil cap off while the motor was running before the...

Hey Don, thanks for the reply. I cleaned the block with plastic scrapers, then vinyl scouring pad, then 400 grit wet and dry. I did not use a wax or grease remover on it, just wiped thoroughly with clean rag. I handled the gasket with bare hands, but carefully, only on the edges. Torqued the...

There is still coolant contaminating the oil :( I changed the oil 4 times with 2 filters, took her for a drive and the oil came out all milky. It runs really well, set the lash, the hot idle speed and the ignition timing. The paradox is that it has never run so well while i have owned it...

She runs!! I turned her over with the spark and FI fuse disconnected and verified that oil was reaching the valves. Then connected everything up and she started quite easily. Blew white smoke for about 5 mins, then started surging between 2-1500 rpm as she warmed up. I turned her off, topped...

Hey guys, I'm looking at a lot of different valve spring compression tools, of many different sizes, shapes and prices. Does anyone know exactly what I need for these 16 valves? Or should I just grab a small one and see? Ok the service manual I'm reading is...

Valve stem seals, gotcha. I will check that all out. Thanks for the info :)

Sorry guys but can anyone tell me what these things are called, so I can figure out what they are and where they go? There are 16 of them :) Thanks again :)

Ok, so I just got the head back from the shop. The bloke at the shop was able to spot a tiny detail that he seemed certain was a gasket failure. I had honed the surface with 400 grit paper and that apparently made it possible for him to detect a tiny trough, untouched by the sanding, between...

Thanks for all the support guys :) I found the 3 core plugs, apart from being a bit dirty there is no visual sign that anything is wrong. They are still there at least... But the pressure test will tell :) If the pressure test comes back OK, is there a chance that something is wrong with the...

Definately putting a new water pump in with the belt kit this time. Did the timing belt 45000km ago, but didn't touch the water pump. Would be great if thats the problem :) Cylinder head goes to the shop tomorrow.

Core plug. ok I will have a research and a look. Does anyone have any photographic reference for this plug? I have booked the cylinder head in to be pressure tested.

The wear on the gasket around the oil feed and oil return seems to be the same as the rest of it. But I have no idea what I'm looking at tbh. Is it possible to perform the pressure test while the motor is disassembled? Some head bolts did seem looser than others. Quick background\Recent...
  19. Headless bolts/Driveless grub screws on Intake header?

    Sidekick/Escudo/Vitara/ Geo/X-90 &Tracker(’89-’98)
No, it was *stuck* on the rear bracket. I hadn't even cracked the bolt :( I was so sure there was a problem I didn't stop to have a good check. Anyway the confirmation that everything was in fact in order really helped :)

Hello everyone, Just got the cylinder head out of my 1995 1.6L 16v 4WD SWB Vitara yesterday. Cleaned it up and honed it with 400 grit wet sandpaper. Tested it thoroughly with a steel ruler and a 0.05mm feeler guage and it passed?? This motor drove almost 2000km with water in the oil. Had to...
