johnfromperth As caseyjones955 says, bad coil/rotor/dizzy cap/ plug leads can all cause rough running. Also replace the spark plugs and breaker points (if your model has them) and check ignition timing (retarded timing can cause overheating).

Change the fuel filter. Blocked filter may be the cause of the stalling.

Overheating may also be due to blocked radiator. (given head job,water pump and thermostat were done recently). Disconnect hoses and give it a good flush with garden hose and refill with coolant. May need new core if badly choked up.

Haptown The thread on the stock oil sensor is 1/8 BSPT with 28 threads per inch. The thread on most universal replacement oil sensors is 1/8 NPT - 27 threads per inch. If a previous owner had forced a NPT fitting in the opening and then replaced it with the original ones, this could have resulted in the threads being cross-threaded and now leaking.

Try removing the sensor, clean everything up, and see how well it goes back in. You could try some Permatex 'ultra grey' RTV sealant if it looks like it is still leaking around the threads.

caseyjones955 It appears to be leaking from that oil PSI sending unit but its hard to tell from a pic, replacement is easy and the units are pretty cheap. A pinhole in the oil filter can give the appearance of various leaks to, its hard to tell but it almost looks like theres a couple damage areas on the filter. Best if you could clean that area and let it run a few moments while getting a visual on it, shut it off and continue to watch, if its leaking that fast you should have no problem locating the leak by watching. To clean it a quick blast of spray parts cleaner and wipe down with a rag before you start. Make sure your oil level is proper first.

As for rough running I would check the basics first, cap/rotor/wires, valve adjustment and a cylinder compression test, all the stuff that should be gone through on a unfamiliar vehicle anyway. If all that checks out then I might start to suspect the carb. Its hard to diagnose without actually hearing it but the symptoms you describe do sound like fuel management and the OEM carbs are notorious.

bad oil leak and other issues, help!

Just picked up a 'rough running' 87 sami. I should prefece this by saying that I've never messed with a rig like this in my life!

The issue's previous owner was having included running rough, engine stalling after take off in 1st, or shift into 2nd, and a major overheating problem (blew both of the old radiator hoses.

He recently had the head gasket done, thermostat replaces, and I believe the water pump as well, and when he continued to have issue's he let it sit for six months...

So fast forward to today, I get the Sammi delivered to me, cause for the price, I couldn't pass it up, even with engine issues.

And sure enough, after charging the battery, and blasting with some starting fluid, I got the engine running. Let it warm up and took it for a couple laps around the block. Temperature stayed consistent, but I had major RPM drops when starting from 1st, or shifting into 2nd...

to top it all off I noticed a shit ton of oil pooling when I parked it, and noticed it dribbling out of a sensor above the oil filter (pictured)



What am I looking at? Easy fix? any thoughts on the other issues?
