I spent about a year torturing those around me, and having countless people tell me that it was the stupidest suspension ever. I eventually invested in a real suspension and it drives better than it did stock. I'm just glad no one died before I got it through my thick skull that a simple shackle lift is a bad idea.
Suddenly the light came on. I bought my 88 Sammy with homemade shackles. (about 4")
Ride was horrible as you describe. I thought it was just cause they were flimsy. So I bought the beefy ones with the cross piece. Handling is still awful. Scary in fact.
After reading the explaination in this thread I can hardly wait to get stock length shackles back on. So , does a block lift cause suspension problems? Thank you all for the information!

Baratacus you didn't say ALL of the negatives. Here's some more.

theaussie Hi i am currently in the position you are talking about, i'm running longer shackles until i get time to do my spoa conversion! My shackles are home made, big and ugly but strong. they are 3" longer than standard= 1 1/2 " actual lift.
They do give you quick cheap lift but the down falls are, VERY rough ride ( this is because as you extend the shackle you push your leaf spring down but the chassis end of your shackle reamains in the same place so you end up with a shackle that is in basically a vertical position as oppossed to your standard shackle which sits on a nice lean and swivels as you ride over bumps. shackles in a vertical position are nearly like steal bumpstops at times. They dont look good either, they hang off the front of your car and can get caught on rocks and logs etc. i did it because i was lazy and i will never do it again. Driving with them on road is annoying and dangerous unless you run low tyre pressure and let your tyres do the cushioning but that makes steering harder when you're not moving and can cause premature wear of your tyres (low pressure is obviosuly fine off road most of the time). sorry for saying all the negative about them, hope you find a good solution that works for you! if it is only temporary like you say then its probably not so bad but if you are anything like me, "temporary" can sometimes be a long time! good luck.

worrkshop I have a '90 Zuki and running 30x9.50R15lt Goodyears. The shackles I have are 7" long and made from 1 1/4" flatbar and 3/8" thick. I have about 3" of clearance at the fenderwells and have not scraped a tire yet. I only keep about 25psi in the tires so when hitting a pothole or large bump on the road it doesn't send me into the woods. You know the suspension is not user friendly so with soft tires there is better grip off road and a little cushion on road. This is just what I do--be careful I wouldn't go too high.

gasjr4wd ANY after market shackle should have a piece welded in between, making a "H". The factory ones do not have this.
And I agree with Billjohn as to being a bad idea and will go farther. Anything near to what you are looking for is insane, on road or off.

I'm not sure what RR package has in it and I'm sure it's worth it, but you know if you weld you can make some of the thing... have any hydro shop make the brake lines, etc.

Good to know, that is def the last thing i want. Thanks for that. Any other suggestions?

Billjohn A 3" shackle lift would require shackles that were 6" longer than stock. Take a look at your stock shackles and tell me that an additional 6" of shackle doesn't make you nervous... You WILL wander all over the road...

Hey i really want to get a quick cheap lift just to get me by till i can get a rocky road spoa lift. What about a shackle lift? It is going on my 93 sami that is my daily driver. If anyone could give some ideas as to what is intelled i would greatly appretiate it.
