phantomrt It will depend on how it works. I read through the service manual on the subject and nothing popped out to me that the various modules share an identifier code that all the cattle in the field have to agree upon. That is how most vehicle manufacturers are doing it now.

If the donor vehicles has no such immobilizer module, then you don't really have to worry about it alone receiving an "okay to start" signal. Of course, if the other modules tell and convince the ECU that, hey, by the way, this car is supposed to see some bits of data before starting..." then you have a problem. Like I said, nothing in the service manual popped out to me regarding that being the case.

Or, simply swapping all the modules in the car at the same time will work. Immobilizers are far more hassle than they are worth. If you are worried about the car getting stolen, install a fuel pump cutoff switch with its switch mounted in an inconspicuous place. But when insurance companies convince the law makers that immobilizers have to be mandated, they win, and the consumer loses.

and doing that will achieve nothing as the ECU has to "see" the immobiliser module and get a signal confirming the key is valid to enable the injectors. You just can't "swap" an ECU without coding it to the ABS, Immobiliser, transmission and body control modules. Pre 2006 you might get away with it, but not on the modern stuff.

The immobiliser light has come up on the dash indicating an issue, it could be a loss of key registration, or a fault in the unit or one of its components. Being a security item, most diagnostic scanners won't even read the module, or acknowledge it exists.

phantomrt If that immobilizer light is illuminated on the dash, there is your problem. If the problem is not in the key itself (is this a "keyless" ignition, or the traditional physical key setup?) it is going to require a suzuki scan tool to get the car started.

Or possibly, replace the ECU in the car with a vehicle without an immobilizer. I don't know how it works, but disconnect the immobilizer module before plugging in the replacement ECU.

Make it clear: does the starter crank and the engine does not fire up, or the starter does not crank at all. 2009 SX4....then what? AUto or manual ? ENgine type ? ANd where are you? USA? Europe? SOuth America ? AUstralia? Africa? HongKong? ...so the right diagnostic can be procured , they are not all the same...

2013GV cold weather, sitting a while then try to start and drive? Sounds like depressed battery volts when cranking has caused the immobiliser module to reset, it "should" just require the keys "re-coding" to the car. Might require a decent diagnostic scanner with coding ability, time to head to a dealer or someone specialising in key coding issues.

Immobilizer light/lock on and can't start the car

New here but thought this might be the best place to ask.

My daughter has a 2009 SX4 that she just bought second hand a couple of months ago.

It was working perfectly fine and she was driving it every day.

She moved Feb 1 and parked the car at her new place but didn't drive it.
It was really really cold and about 9 days after it was parked she tried to start it.....started fine but then when she went to use it 2 hours later it wouldn't start. We haven't been able to get it started since that day and that was a month ago now.

We have tried to boost it, put a portable charger on it and tried to boost that way. Ended up taking out the battery (battery is only a year old) and we put it on an overnight charger, got a mechanic shop to check and it was at 100% so we put it back in and still can't start the car.

Now there appears to be an immobilizer light/lock symbol lit up on her dash. Apparently this is some sort of protection system that when the light is on the car cant' be started.

Had a friend with a basic diagnostic unit come check and there are no codes showing up so there was nothing to clear there.

Called a 'key guy' who said from what he can tell it's not the actual key. He thinks it could be the antenna ring or possibly the starter.

She would have to get it towed now and doesn't want to get ripped off by a mechanic or pay a ton to have it towed.

It doesn't make any sense to me that it would just stop working like this.

Any thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.
