Hi , I upgrade my samurai 89 tire to 29" , now run slowly and heavy, and MPG is less ( heavy fuel cost) . what tranfer gear kit i need for move 29" tire . who sell kit . Thanks .
Youre going to want the 4.16 gear set. It reduces high range by 12%. Many vendors sell them. Trailtough, lowrangeoffroad to name a few.
Keep in mind though if you want to go bigger sometime youll want the 4.9 or even the 6:1 gears.
I don't really want to go with bigger tires, but I wouldn't mind going even slower since 100% of my driving is off-road, top speed of 45-50 mph. Maybe I should just jump straight to 4.9 ?
How difficult of a job is this? I've done engines, but never a transfer case.
Putting in the gears isnt too difficult. There are a few sets of instructions online that are easy to follow. I had to use a press but i hear other have used a hammer and drift. I tried that at first but couldnt pound the gears/bearings back on and the neighbors were getting pissed off. I did 90% of mine on a back apartment patio and i had zero experience with this kind of stuff.
If u decide to go it by urself:
Use the deep freeze to shrink.(overnight worked for me)
Do not heat the gear but sunwarm will not hurt it.
The rest can be done with simple tools.
Just be extra careful to keep everything uber clean.
Use whatever cleaning fluid u have available and do NOT dip ur hands in it.
Follow the instructions included with the parts...or off the forum tech sites.
It will work.
Mine did.
Minimum pounding.
Use a deadblow hammer.(if u must)
Take lotsa pix.
Report how it goes here.
