Default More Gearbox Problems

Hi Guys,

I've recently noticed that my 2001 Wagon (Manual, 34K) is making a wierd rumbling noise, but only when I turn left!! It sounds as if it's coming from the centre of the car at the floor pan level. I've had a look underneath and also taken it to my local garage, but so far have been unable to ascertain where the noise is coming from. The general consensus at the moment is a differential bearing, causing the diff to rub on it's casing when you turn left? I noticed a similar post on this site, but that was for an auto box where the driveshaft was rubbing. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm aware of the 3rd gear and endplate issues with these gearboxes but I haven't found anything regarding differentials.

Default Gearbox problem

Last year, I also had this problem with my 2001 Wagon R (which I bought in 2008), a knocking sound when turning left. My dealer solved this by modifying the gearbox support and it's OK ever since. It appears to be a known problem with early second generation wagon R models (from 2000 and up). The Dutch importer advised their dealers to integrate this modification in their service programme. My car was actually repaired under warranty, even after eight years!
