Exclamation Engine noises- don't always suspect the timing chain...

For a while now I've had an intermittent noise in the engine around the timing chain area after first startup. I'd described it as a rhythmic grating sort of noise that would usually disappear after a minute or two, but sometimes would be there for 5 minutes or longer.

Of course it was concerning me and I was dreading it being the timing chain tensioner (on a 2004 model XL-7 with 65000km.)

I read in a couple of threads about people mentioning their noise was actually caused by the drive belt tensioner, so decided to investigate. I thought I'd try spraying some silicone spray into the bearing area of the tensioner to see what effect it would have. I'm pleased to say that the noise has definitely changed/ quietened down/ vanished.

So thankyou to those people who shared that info - I forget which particular timing chain thread it was buried in.

I'll keep an eye (or ear!) on it but the last two mornings it has not had the noise.

Yes, I couldn't see how it could be the tensioner given the year model, service history and low kms travelled. Of course it was the first thing I thought of though- given the number of threads on the subject on here!

I'm lucky that with my electric thermofan conversion access to the tensioner is easy. I'll wait and see if the noise returns, spray it again to see if it vanishes and then look into buying a new tensioner if it does. I only replaced the belts about five months back and checked the tensioner spun freely then.

I spoke too soon! Yesterday the noise was there, but today it was gone (probably because today I was armed ready to listen in with a long handled screwdriver to the my ear! )

.... and silent again the next day!

It does seem to have changed it, in that it's now not happening virtually every day. I'm not too concerned just yet.

I will be trying to isolate it next time I hear it.

Take the belt off and spin the tensioner by hand.
