I truly do not think it was the oil that caused your issue. I do not have enough info or am not there to inspect myself but I think there is another issue

maybe not, but it's a mighty big coincedence that my leak free car for 90,000 miles suddenly sprung leaks every place that had a gasket or seal. that and the swollen rubber gasket on the oil filter...and right after the oil change. I don't usually look for black helocopters....... but....

i think something internally caused the oil pressure to increase drastically, thus causing all the gaskets and seals to fail. i don't think it was the valvoline oil that caused it.

well, update. I had the rear main seal replaced finally. so far so good. no sudden oil pressure spikes that I can detect. and now, with different oil, no more leaks anywhere.
still looks like oil additive problem to me. by the way, no reply from valvoline. big shock.

I wish I had the magic answer, but I don't.

I just changed my the oil on my '01 @188,000 miles with Valvoline 5W-30 and have had any major leaks. I've got a couple very minor ones, but there seems to be no major changes on those. I suppose that there is a chance that there may have been a bad batch of 10W-40 go out, but I'd bet there'd be a lot bigger flap that just you.

Here's a long shot - your oil pressure relief valve may have malfuntioned. Rather than bleeding pressure off as is the norm - it stuck closed and didn't bleed off. That might generate enough extra pressure to blow out your seals and leak like you described.

The real question is - did an additive in the oil knock some crud loose and gum it up? I've had the opposite happen on an old Buick I had. I used an engine flush to get the crud out of the engine and free a sticking lifter. It worked like a charm, but when I was cruising home that evening, it stuck the relief valve open and I had no pressure at idle. I was able to limp home and rebuild the pump & relief spring. Didn't have a problem since.

Just an idea.

I suppose anything is possible. after 40+ something years playing with Motors, I've seen alot of strange sh#t. I just wish I had heard back from valvoline. even to tell me the same thing you just did. Used to be alot easier to comunicate with oil tech people. Of course, that was before computors simplified our lives :-)

You probably won't hear back from Valvoline until it runs through the Customer Service People and Research & Development to determine if an additive issue is a possibility. After that, it may go to Legal to determine if they could be held liable for the repairs to your vehicle. The way I look at it, by the time you hear back you'll probably have forgotten why you wrote in the first place. Wait, did I hear the black helicopters in the background?
