Our 2000 GV averages 20.6 mpg city/highway. This is disgusting for a small SUV. It is the only reason we are selling it. We have owned it for the last 4 years and otherwise love it.

To compare. The zuki is my wifes car. I drive a 2001 Mercedes Benz ML430 SUV. 5,500lbs, V-8, full time 4x4, and I get an average of 19 city/hwy, day in and day out. On trips, it is not uncommon to get 22-24mpg at 75mph with the cruise set. This rig is twice the size of the zuki, pulls 3 times the trailer load, has every creature comfort in the book, seats 7, and I bought it used for well less than $20k.

I do love the little Suzuki, but the fuel mileage is not acceptable.

Granted the XL-7 economy can suck - I'm averaging 13.97l/100km in city driving with my V6 5 speed auto.

Unless you guys get a different "ML430" it is actually shorter than the XL-7 - the XL-7 is 4700mm and the ML430 is 4587mm. We also only seem to get 5 seater ML430's here? The fuel economy is impressive!? Towing capacity is 2650kg vs 1850kg, so not "3 times"- granted the Merc would do it a lot easier.

If they were a bit longer I'd be kicking myself right now for buying the XL-7! The specs are listed below for the Aussie versions.

Sorry I was comparing it to my Grand Vitara. I wanted her to get the xl7, but she thought the GV was "cute". Women.... The GV has a towing capacity of about 2,000 lbs and the ML 6,000, so it is 3 times. The ML is available here with third row seating, like the XL7. I do not have the option with mine, hell, I hardly ever have anyone in the back seat.

I can see how my first email can seem as though I am putting down the GV, that is not my intent. I was just a bit frustrated that this small economy sized SUV only gets a couple of mpg better than my big, powerful luxury rig. I see no reason that the GV should not get in the high 20's and the XL7 a couple of points less than that.

Interesting how the towing weights are different for Australia vs where you live?

The official city economy figure here for my XL-7 is over 16l/100km, so I'm reasonably happy with getting just under 14l/100km. My previous vehicle was a Daihatsu Feroza (called a Rocky in the USA), it averaged just under 11l/100km. It weighed around 400kg less, was a manual and had only a 1.6l four cylinder engine- so the XL-7 doesn't do too bad IMHO in comparison.

BTW I've found a lot of diesel engined vehicles rate really well for the "official" consumption figures, but the real world experience is a bit different.

I'm only getting about 17 mpg highway on my '02 XL-7. I take care of it, get all of the recommended flushes, fills, etc. With the problems I'm having, if I didn't have 136,000 miles on it, I would sell it.

Just to sign in on this ... as far as GAS consumption goes - for the last peirod, of taking out my trailer as well as some city driving, I got:
- 21.186 MPG Imperial gallons, or
- 17.641 MPG US gallon, or
- 13.333 l/100km

Overall, for 2 1/2 years of use, I've gotten cumulative:
21.534 Imperial
17.934 USgal
13.099 l/100km
That includes city driving all year (worse consumption is in winter), highway (quite good then, any time of year), and with trailer at times.
