well, a bit of a change of plans to what I thought I'd end up with.... After talking to the tyre dealer about my driving habits, where I drive and what I wanted from the tyres he steered me away from A/T's.
However, he then suggested some different model H/T's and I thought if I'm going to go for a road tyre then I might as well get a decent one instead of possibly something crap like the D687 again. So, I've got these on order:
Cooper Discoverer HP Sport
If I ever need to do any serious off road driving in the future it will be a good excuse to get a second set of rims with some serious off road tyres. We don't get snow where I live and apart from fairly smooth dirt roads all the serious 4WD tracks are closed to the public within a couple of hours drive. If I do go off road it will most likely be sand which these should be fine on.
At least I shouldn't have any more sideways sliding in roundabouts and traction problems at T intersections in the wet.
