Hi all,
I have a 2001 Grand Vitara. A couple months ago my Viatra started making a noise in the rear that sounded like on of the universal joints was going bad. I had an extended warranty on the car, so I called the warranty company and they set me up with Aamco transmissions to fix the problem. After all the hoopla between the warranty company and Aamco the decision was made to rebuild the rearend. This was done.. Now this is where another problem started. A problem that wasn't there before. After all of this had been done I now get a vibration from underneath the car that no one can find. I took it back to Aamco and we testroad it and heard the noise that starts at 45mph. 55mph through 65 mph a deep groaning vibration is felt under the car like it's a bearing or something. I took it to another garage for another opinion and they couldn't figure it out either. The garage owner felt so bad about it he didn't even charge me for his time. The nearest Suzuki dealer is 50 miles from me. I wonder if it would be worth the trip or if anyone else had this kind of problem. Is there anyone out there with the right answer PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!!
I'm going out on a limb here, but it really sounds like they did not set the ring and pinion gears up correctly when they rebuilt it. Did any of these shops pull the 3rd member out and verify the pinion preload, backlash, and contact pattern? If not, I'd take it back and demand they inspect the differential. If they refuse, talk to your warranty people and see if they will pay for a shop that specializes in rear-ends to check it out. You might try reminding them that taking it to the dealership will most certainly be more expensive than finding another shop. BTW - the noise you hear is likely the gears grinding themselves to oblivion because of a poor setup.
Also, check rear tire balance and trueness. It MAY be that easy.
I'd make the trip to the dealer if that fails.
Also it could be a drive shaft out of balance, particularly if they didn't observe how it was initally installed when they disconnected it, or they knocked a weight off. There is also a center carrier bearing and mount on some drive shafts that could lead to your prob.

I got my car back on Monday evening. It's condition is worse than it was when I took it in PLUS!!!!!!!!!! First off something mysteriously happened to a half tank of gasoline, then noise is still there only it starts at 58 mph instead of 56 and gets louder the faster you go. I can hear the gears rumbling especially when coming to a stop, I can hear the gears whining down. Aamco told me there was no noise with their sound detectors hooked up. I say just use your freekin ears to hear the noise. I am going to have to have a big talk with the owner or manager at Aamco because I think they are just trying to cover things up. They were suppose to put in new parts, but if they did the noise would gone if the adjustments are where they are suppose to be. I think they just tried to adjust the noise out and it's not working. Or they are missing the big picture and overlooking something. Also my tailpipe was broken off. It didn't fall off, it was pushed upward and snapped off. My brand new brakes are chattering and vibrating going down hills and they never did that before. It's almost like someone was riding the brakes and got them hot. I have some real issues here and I am very upset with Aamco.
