Default 2003 XL-7, A/C problems

Hello. First time post. I have a 2003 XL-7 with an A/C that sporadically alternates between blowing cold and hot air. When running the A/C for an extended period of time the air being discharged becomes hot. I then shut off the A/C and turn it back on and it returns to blowing cold air.

I can hear the compressor click on/off repatedly. It does not remain on for more than 20 - 30 secs and then clicks back off. has been to the dealer 3 times. They first filled up system with coolant and checked for leaks - found none. No report that they cannot duplicate the problem.

Has anyone experienced these problems? How have they been repaired.

Expansion valve usually solves this issue.

What is an expansion valve and what does it do? How does it effect the AC? I'mn having the same problem and I've been told I need a new condensor.

The expansion valve controls the release of the compressed gas to cause the cooling effect. It's fitted into the small radiator type device (I'm sure it's got a technical name ) under the dash that the inlet air fllows through to be cooled.

My old car did a similar thing because the expansion valve was icing up and stopping the gas flowing. It would cool for a few minutes and then blow hot air for ages, then a bit of cool air , then hot for ages.....

There was a factory service bulletin on this subject a while back. Check out TSB 0303273R (NHTSA #10001714). It was in re to an earlier year but it's probably related. Good luck.
