Heater smell ....

Hi all,
i own an Epica '04 with about 25,000 miles . Have had it since new with no problems other than an oxygen sensor recall , and a brake light switch replacemant which was also a recall .....
Now , in the last few weeks i get a smell from the heater when i turn on the fan ...... Smells like vinegar or silicone....... all fluid levels are normal with the coolant being changed way before the smell.. The smell seems to lesson after the fan has been running a while ..... Done a visual under the hood but see no traces of anti freeze or even any oil spots any where... To me this points to a heater core leak but as mentioned it's not an antifreeze smell as i took the over flow cap off and took a deep whiff ,
any ideas any one.

Verona's have a Cabin Filter under the passenger cowl panel under the wipers at the base of the windshield. Start there.
