Default Steering Wheel feels tight, not smooth... please help.

Hello,

I bought an 2009 SX4 used. I'm over 37,000 miles now so no warranty. And I don't have the money to get a check at a dealer. My steering wheel feels very tight. I've checked the power steering fluid and that is full, so it's not that. It just moves rough and not smooth when I handle the steering wheel. And when I turn, instead of smoothly moving back into place it goes somewhat slow. I am concerned. Does anyone know what this could be?

welcome to the forum, not sure what it could be, if you purchased it from a dealer then take it back, if not then i suggest a check when finances permit, i'm not sure if tire pressures will cause that problem/symptom, maybe incorrect fluid in the system....

Sort of like checking the fence after the cows got out, but did you at least test drive this vehicle before you bought it?
Not being mean, just askin'

Default steering

Possible failure of the power steering pump, but they usually get noisy before that happens. Anybody else????

The SX4 seems to go through power steering fluid very quickly - the level will be full but the fluid gets very dark very quickly. I have replaced the fluid 3 times in 70k miles on one (dealer did it once and put an additive in) and 2 times in 23k miles on another. My steering did not get hard but it did make squeeks etc... Once I changed to full synthetic Dexron I have not had a problem.

SX4Uzer You should start by changing the fluid. Its pretty easy to due. We have discussed it before because of squeals. But its still a front wheel drive so its gonna be a little tight especially when its not movin.
