Modern synthetics allow for oil change intervals of 12,000 mile+
Not really.

Look hard at the study you referenced...

Finding 1
"For any type of vehicle, oil change intervals can be simply and safely extended beyond their current level TO the maximum mileage recommended by the vehicle/engine manufacturer."

In other words, not some arbitrary longer mileage figure that the synthetic oil its self may be able to achieve on its own merit in conjunction with the discussed high efficiency oil filters, lab results, etc, but what the vehicles MANUFACTURER recommends.

And we all know about the manufactures recommendations telling us to REDUCED oil change mileage periodicity for "adverse" driving conditions which consist of towing applications, dessert / high dirt areas and continuous short trips. Oil change intervals are often based on periodicity (maximum months) as opposed to actual "normal" driving mileage as well.

Now show me a vehicle / engine manufacturer that allows..

You can agree or disagree with the recommendations but you can't deny that manufacturers are recommending extended intervals eg Volkswagen 10000 miles, BMW 15000 miles, Ford 7500 miles. Of course you're still expected to check the oil level regularly.

Truth. There are so many oil change myths. They are based on old dino oils and old filter technology. It's nice that some auto manufacturers are getting with the program of selling cars, instead of selling service. Many modern synthetic oils are actually good for 25,000 miles.

BMW 15000 miles
So folks shell out big bucks for a Bimmer and then they change the oil every year and a half?

If it were mine...I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

Is this an all model BMW manufacture's recommendation?

There's still a time element. As fantastic as those extended intervals seem they are no worse than the idea of buying the very best oil and filters and still changing them every 3k miles.

I'll Tell ya' what...Bimmer guys in the REAL world don't support the extended oil change interval therory!

Give a listen to what what they really think and their supportive reasoning. THIS makes sense to me...

Oil change every 7500 miles??? [Archive] - bimmerfest - BMW Forums

When to change oil? [Archive] - BimmerPost - BMW Forums

It's a forum. Like this one. It's not research.
