I wonder if we can change the little bracket mount inside the custom dash mount in the Suzukis? Seems rather odd that Suzuki would have something like this become obsolete so quickly.
I was disappointed to find out about MSN obsolescence AFTER I purchased an SX-4. I love Suzuki's though.

I did a lot of research to find out what Garmin units came with what year of SX4 models with 760 being the latest for SX-4.

I did discover, however, that Garmin has two recent models that provide the same information using Garmin's NuviLink service. I believe this is data that is sent via satellite signal to the units.

It would be great if someone, whether Suzuki or aftermarket (even Garmin) would design or have manufactured, adaptors to easily change the Suzuki camel-hump in-dash mount for inevitable upgrades.

The 2011 models come with the Garmin 1690. Different mount than the 7xx. Data comes over AT&T. It's newer but not necessarily better.

Default I Replaced the OEM Garmin and Traffic Receiver

I am new to forum with a new (to me) 2009 SX4 Crossover, purchased used last month. The OEM Suzuki Garmin navigator with MSN Traffic was missing when I got it. The original owner probably wanted to keep the MSM service for another car! (I hope they get lost the day that MSM pulls the service next year.

Anyway....

I purchased a refurbished Garmin 765T with free FM traffic off the Internet for about $160.00. While it can feed the radio thru FM, I use the unit's speaker to hear navigation instructions. As for Bluetooth... it would not connect to my phone, although it did see it (a Verizon Casio Boulder). I did not expect it would work, as Garmin does not list my phone as compatible.

As for traffic: I had to separately buy another FM traffic receiver cable, as the one that came with the replacement unit is also the power supply which plugs into the power outlet in the dash. I would have had to replace the original mounting bracket to use it. However I found that Garmin has a separate FM traffic receiver (cable) that plugs directly into the car's original cable for the OEM Garmin. Replacing the MSN traffic cable receiver with the new FM unit was a simple swap. The new FM traffic receiver plugs into the radio antenna and replaces the OEM MSDirect receiver. Once you remove the radio, the whole process takes 2 minutes. The hardest thing about the job is deciding what to do with the excess cable.

It is a simple replacement. The Garmin FM Traffic unit I used is GTN - 10.

My MSN subscription ended in 2010. I really dont need it. The GPS directions are free. If I ever let my sx4 go I would leave the GPS in the car for the next owner but the dealer would probably take it out for him or herself.
BlueEgg did you get the car from a dealer or a private owner?

Is it 1690 or 1490?

Went looking at new SX4 at a dealership. The salesman demonstrated the Garmin Nuvi 1490/1690 GPS/Navigation module but didn't know much about it.

The operation of this 1490/1690 looks standard, except that one of the opening screen options is "Suzuki Dealerships". My question is: How is the 1490/1690 software and maps kept up to date? Do owners go to the Gamin support website for software updates and maps? Would doing so erase the special Suzuki-related (Trip 2.0?) screens?

It is a 1690. It's very similar to a standard one but "safe mode" is on and can't be turned off, plus there is some Suzuki-specific content. And more importantly, the signals coming out are set up to tie into the car stereo.

The software and maps are kept up to date by connecting to the Garmin site, same as any other Garmin GPS. It remains the special Suzuki version when doing this. (Don't remember what the Trip 2.0 screen is though.)
