Shift knob

okay - this might be a dumb question, but hey, it's my first car!

I have an automatic SX4 crossover and the shift knob really gets in my way when I'm reaching for my coffee cup, or trying to get my sunglasses- it's just too tall.
I'd like to get a smaller, rounder one from my local canadian tire store.
Can i just unscrew the existing one and replace it with the new, or is there some secret method a noob like me wouldn't know about?

i changed mine was just a matter of unscrewing the old one and fitting the new one took me 5 mins.

Thanks- Mind you, the shaft is really long, so I guess I'm stuck with a tall shifter after all- I was hoping to make it shorter.
Oh well.

sawzall will help shorten it, just make sure you leave enought thread on it to attach a new one.
