we changed out the bulb, and then tried changing out the socket. the passenger side is fine. has anyone had this problem?

SInce the low beam works, as I can understand, it means the +12V is fed to the socket, meaning to both filaments.
Each filament is turned ON separately by grounding the other end of the filament.
I do not know how the new socket was spliced to the original wiring....but those splices could be used as a measuring point ..involving taking the light unit out again.
A similar case was on this or another SX4 forum recently and it appears a new lamp that was installed was actually faulty too......I never install a new bulb without testing it first outside the unit, using a battery charger or some other 12V source. and by tjhe way, testing the one that was removed....
<If you have some other detail come and tell...

..... Is there a separate fuse for the high beam? .
No.
One fuse feeds both filaments (hi and lo) on one side, another feeds both filaments on the other side.

high beams of both sides are grounded by separate wires that tie together to the same dimmer switch contact. I read what you write..but an inverted pair of wires at the socket would end up with the result you describe...

Same for low beams.

Whatever happens here happens very near the headlights.

DID you test the old bulb (the one that you have removed) on the other side?..or by any means to see ifit was the culprit in the first place...

Thanks for the hint, Paul......I'll verify . Honestly, I did not peek into that physical section of the car yet so I can be mistaken here....

EDIT: THe taiwan version has relays...I like that ..and there are separate relays for each filament...which could explain the oddity as reported on this thread......but the import version here indeed has relays also but for the daylight running lamps, keeping the common grounding circuit without separate relays.

Naturally the diagrams I have are for the 2007-2009 so there might have variations in the newer editions.....
I.ll pay a visit tunder the hood and clear up my mind on that.
