Unhappy intermittent coolant temp drop+cold heater

This problem comes and goes, inexplicably. The temp gauge usually reads 50% on the dash, and heat comes out of the heater. Sometimes, though, it falls to just above C, and the heater is somewhat cold. Other times it falls all the way down to zero and there is almost no heat coming from the heater (just a little heat though).

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jesse

I would go straight for the thermostat, cheap and easy to replace.

check your cooland make sure there is no air in the system. sounds like a coolant problem to me. also could be your sending unit and check to see that the heater valve is properly working when you turn the heat on. it is on one of the heater hoses going out side in the engine bay. that valve is what opens and lets the hot water in to work.
