Default Problem Starting Geo; grinds when turning over

I saw a similar question to mine posted earlier in the forum, but there were no replies, but I'm hoping someone one will be able to help.

I have a 97 Geo Metro and one day just it did not start (turn key, nothing). Battery was fine, so I went after the starter. Bought a rebuilt starter from AutoZone, installed it without problems.
When I went to start, it now turned over but a loud grinding sound was heard as if the starter did not line up with flywheel. I thought it could of been the factory shim so I tried removing it, same problem. I have a hunch that the starter is not completely popping out.

Any advice on the problem or how I would go about testing the solenoid on the starter to make sure it pops correctly would be greatly appreciated.

I would return the starter after checking the teeth to it, you don't want to damage the flywheel teeth. I hate AutoZone and will never buy much from their store. If you have not turned in your core, compare the teeth to your new/old starter. Goodluck.

There are twop different starters one for the standard and one for the automatic. make sure you get the right one. I accidentally got one for a automatic and mine ground, then went back and got the standard starter and it worked fine.
