Default Geo Metro 1993 Crank Shaft

Hello my check engine light went on and I looked up the engine diagnostics code for it and it was a 42 for Crankshaft Position Sensor circuit. I noticed also that my car was leaking oil and was wondering if there was any correlation between the two and I was wondering if there was a tutorial or directions online on how to fix it or if it is a hard thing to fix on my own. Thank You

The crank sensor is directly under the main shaft pully at the oil pan. Easy change. Not sure if it's the cause for your oil leak though.

The crank sensor is in the front of the oil pan under crank pulley. One bolt is all it takes to remove. I guess the oil leak could cause problems if it is covering the sensor, not really sure. The leak could be either your oil pan or crank seal. Other less likely place's would be valve cover gasket and from o-ring in distributor shaft

hi there..i have a 94 metro 3 cyl 5 speed. i ran a diagnostic on my car that had the check engine light on. the system reported a code 42. when i looked it up in the book though it is for a crank angle sensor/camshaft positioning sensor..which in my case is actually the pick up coil inside the distributor..refering to your problem, im not sure if that is the same as the crankshaft position sensor, which is near the oil pan, unless crank angle sensor is another name for the crankshaft position sensor. so confusing
i would be grateful if someone had any information on this problem that theyd be willing to share, like how to correct it if theyve experienced something similar or just have the solution. the book says to check the connector of the sensor and to check for a circuit. it also says to check for the correct air gap between the distributor and the pick up coil(camshaft positioning sensor) i got the feeler gauge and im ready to go in. the plug looks like it was pretty tightly squeezed in there but hopefully it will come out with ease this weekend, or perhaps i have an incorrect gap and correcting it will solve the problem. i did notice a few drops of apparently fresh oil inside the distributor. i hope that isnt an indication of ANOTHER problem. thanks for any help you guys can give. you guys are great..i have read your posts on this site before and im sure a lot of people are grateful to you for saving them time, money and headaches. kudos!

hi, I believe i have seen that code once before. The car still ran perfectly. I don't believe you will find a crank sensor on your engine, only the sensor in the distributor. I never had time to diagnose mine, i installd another used distributor and disconnected my battery and it never came back. The front crank and cam seals or very common to leak, as is the distributor o-ring. I don't believe either would have caused the code to come up. Personal experience has shown me that code 42 doesn't seem to affect performance and you can just run it if you don't want to get another distributor.

welp..im not sure if ive lost any performance, but it doesnt seem to interfere with the operation of the car. im just a perfectionist sometimes..and im in a perfectionist mood. i hope cleaning the connectors, making sure everythings tight and perhaps adjusting the air gap will do the trick. theres so many things i wanna fix on this car. this is just step one. i have an oil consumption problem(loss of oil/blue smoke) and the light on the clock display doesnt work, to name a couple.

A "Geo Metro 1993" did not come with a "Crank Position Sensor" (CKP) "directly under" (actually behind) the crankshaft pulley & mounted thru the oil pan flange. That sensor was introduced in '96.

The "diagnostic code...42" is for "Crank Angle Sensor/Camshaft Position Sensor" (CMP) functions which are accomplished by the 2nd module inside the distributor on a '93.

You really should offer some clues as to the general area your Metro is leaking oil if you want the best suggestions.
