Default MPG revisited

Sure, I know its been discussed many times, but oddly enough I got No Matches when I just searched MPG! I know EPA once infamously revised their MPG figures. However now I'm left wondering what Metro fans are actually getting these days for MPG on fuel injected, 3 cylinder, 5 speed, 2 door hatch versions.

Some suggest only in the 30's while ads often claim the optimistic 50's. Seems to be a big gap. I'd hope to regularly see mid 40's in mixed driving & occasionally hitting low 50's cruising w/favorable wind.

Please sound off once again on what your Metro achieves MPGwise.

And I flaunt it!

There's a very nice looking Tropical green '95 Metro on ebay that the seller included photos of the original window stick. It shows an EPA 44/49 MPG. It also revealed something I hadn't seen, SS exhaust system.

How often do you see "57 MPG"?

My 98 was getting almost exactly 52 while I was working on a job that I drove all county roads @60mph to get there. Now I'm on the Interstate @70-75mph a lot and it's dropped into the mid to upper 40's. I don't really check like I use to, but I was keeping mileage when I was getting 52 and that was for well over a 6 month period

I have a '95 Suzuki Swift with the 1.3 4cyl, 5spd manual trans, 2 door. I estimate that I drive a 75/25 mix of highway/city (highway speeds of 60mph and under). If I drive like I don't care about gas mileage, I get 42-43 mpg. If I drive conservatively, I get 46-47 mpg. My goal is to hit 50mpg using some hyper mileage techniques, but I haven't gotten there yet.

Great ID $400chevymetro. Finally got to talk w/owner of the white Chevy Metro I'd just found & convinced him to sell it after learning it was indeed a 3 cyl/5spd. He'd been out of town on vacation. His asking price $400.

While it plainly needs some cosmetic help, he says it only needs a timing belt to run again. Unfortunately heavy rain canceled my plans to drive out there to look at it this PM.

That's great! Being a newbie I've missed whatever modifications or special driving techniques you utilize to achieve "57 MPG...Consistantly if not better." Care to review or point me to threads explaining it? Can I presume it takes discipline & lots of 'sweet spot' modest speeds?

I wouldn't want to "flaunt it" however I would like a conspicuous Made in Canada sticker.

What MPG should I expect a stock 2000 Metro 3 cyl, 5 speed, 3 door to achieve in a normal everyday mix of driving below 70 MPH?

The best fuel saving tips I use are these............

Properly maintained vehicle.
Inflate tires to max (44PSI in my case)
Driving habits (I never take the Interstate and never drive over 55 MPH)
Vacuum Gauge (I use it to maintain constant throttle)

Click my sig and you will see every documented repair and mod done to my Metro.

So you would rather fill your tires to max PSI, which (in addition to being unsafe) causes uneven tire wear due to over-inflation, and have your tires wear out prematurly? I'd rather spend a few cents more in gas then buy new tires more often.
