Default new guy, with a question

Hello,

I recently bought a 1996 Metro to use as a daily driver/for work instead of my other car.

I've got a question though.

It sounds like the wheel bearing needs replaced in the front.

Does anyone have any idea how easy this would be to do at home with basic hand tools, or would I need a shop (press?)

Yes, the place where you will get a quick, knowledgable response is at TeamSwift.net

Notice, ".net" not .com

What makes you think you have a wheel bearing problem?

great thanks. I'll head over there and ask them.

To know the bearings are going out is really based on the noise it makes. Its like a "singing" sound you hear on tractor trailer tires in the rain.

Jack up one front tire off of the ground and SLOWLY start driving the car's wheel. the only one that will spin is the one that is in the air. you'll hear the noise then and can pretty much confirm that is the sound. If you're going to do it, make sure you block other tires to prevent the car from moving.

Mine went out at 168k and sounded more like a front end growl/grinding. But it is a easy replacement with hand tools. Just use a socket to pound off the hub/bearing on and off if you don't have/use a press. I have a press and still went that route. Two things one get the good quality bearings with seals on both sides of the bearing. This holds the grease in place were its needed. Otherwise its just gets hot and slides into the hub/center. Take your time do it right have fun.
